BBM On Android - The 1-Day Review

Alright, BBM is official and it's running on Android. It's not without tons of problems and hick-ups.  Basically, my marketing instinct considered BlackBerry is running a PR nightmare.

Here is my review for the 1-day experience with BBM.

Interface

It's cold and stiff. Even with the new design based on BB10 OS, BBM is too plain. Of course there are rooms for improvements:
- improve touch response
- inconsistent touch gesture access
- background customization
- less repetitive buttons
- larger emoticon (currently sooooo tiny)
- logical hidden menu
- cross apps sharing
- personalized status home page
- no tablet interface

The first thing I noticed was the hidden menu are repeating everywhere, such Invite button appears in 3 places despite 2 being hidden. So unnecessary, but it does hide the lack of additional features of BBM at first glance.

Fun factors when using the BBM is sorely missed. My wife is not tech savvy, but she immediately said she didn't like BBM within the first 2 minutes. Sure, BBM made Voice Note and Picture Sharing famous, but those are previous age features. Nowadays, messaging apps compete on video calls, video sharing, stickers, personalization, etc. The fun factors of messaging which make them "fun" to use.

And NO, BBM is designed for business is NOT a good reason for not including those features. It's like having a wedding cake without decorations, just the cake.

Network Communication

The legendary BlackBerry encryption and secure network is probably the only asset that BlackBerry has, which won't mean anything now with Samsung Knox and others producing similar security.  In fact, the communication slowed down by the process of cross network transfers.

A strange, if not a bug, anomaly is that BBM doesn't appear to have 'First In-First Out' traffic control over the messages typed in. Meaning if 1 message failed to be sent (maybe bad signal or interference), it will be sent later, much later than the next input you have typed in. This makes the conversation confusing to users and can cause misunderstandings. Business people won't like it. Even worse, those in romantic relationship will scream.

The Launch (Marketing Commentary)

Imagine you are launching a rocket to the moon, you will prepare everything and calculate every risk that can occur.  BlackBerry (previously RIM) should know that they don't have the infrastructure to contain to flood of users wanting to either use or try BBM, especially on Android environment.  Yet, the preparation was not well calculated. Disaster occured and they missed the launch event.

The second launch, they knew what to expect, again they failed to manage the risk. Instead of letting potential customers know ahead of tome there will be a line of waiting list for the pin registration, they just took it as it came to them. This mishap caused them loss of users. They should have more than 10 millions users within the first 10 hours if they managed it the right way from the beginning.  Blackberry is happy with nearly 5 millions users in 8 hours.  Even McDonald's gives us counters of how many burgers they served which is great PR for the Golden Arc brand.

Conclusion

BBM launch is a catastrophy and BBM is a major disappointment.  It's like witnessing an Ape Man walking in New York City.  BBM is still admiring the city, forgetting that they should have been the awe of competitors and users.

Will BBM survive the new messaging age?  If they are quick to improve BBM, maybe.  If their headstrong tradition dictates BBM is good enough, well, like I said before, we are witnessing history in the making. This is the 'do or die' time for BlackBerry.  Either we, the users, will attend a funeral soon or a celebration of success.

First Impression: BBM on Android - Official - Part 4

Finally, after false start, frozen server, damaged network, BlackBerry sold, re-announcement. It's here, BBM the official app for Android.

Here is the Playstore link: "BBM" - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bbm

It's free and still so many fake apps, so follow the link, you will be okay.

The Impression

Well, similar to the beta with minor revisions. Obviously, Smoother than the beta. However, with layer of network communication required for BBM to get connections, the app messaging is a tad slower.

The menu is simple. Swipe left to right for main messaging menu, right to left for specifically parts menu (like chat, groups, etc).

As for initial registration, for those who has registered, you can just login with your email and password.

For those who has not registered, follow the registration process.

If you want to change email registration, please delete the old one.

The process doesn't take long, compared to the previous version. Once you registered, you will receive your pin.

Use your pin to get added or add others with their pin. As for the precious and addictive groups, scan the group barcode to gain access to the group.

Turning on and off the annoying notification is also easy, by opening the group or person chat, Swipe the menu right to left or access it with the 3 dot menu button on left bottom corner. The toggle of notification can be found there.

Sending voice note and pictures are also smooth, without a hitch.

As mentioned, the only problem that I can notice, or you will soon notice, is the sending and receiving is not as fast as other messaging apps due to the multi-layers network connectivity: BBM App to Internet then to BBM network.

It's not an impressive app, but simple to run and you can get BBM connection.

It's a good beginning though, not major nor impressive, but BlackBerry has finally reopen the BBM to Android. That means BlackBerry, at least, did what they promised. So go ahead and use BBM, the original yet not the best.

First Impression: BBM On Android Part 3 - The Rollercoaster?

Is it on? Nope. In fact, BBM for Android and iOS got delayed again.

Some news has spread that it will be turned on again on 27th September, BlackBerry has denied the news and the stated it will not be this week.

Well, here is the rollercoaster ride. Today, both Mashable and The Guardian has released an article that BlackBerry has been sold to Fairfax Financial for US$ 4.7 billions. Fairfax Financial previously owned 10% of BlackBerry shares, now the sole owner. That means Blackberry stock was sold at $9. BlackBerry stock highest price was $128 in 2008.

So what's the deal? Looks like after losing eearly US$ 1 billion in 2nd quarter 2013 due to the failed Z10 and stumbling on the launch of BBM on Android and iOS, BlackBerry has lost more than just their pride. They have lost money, time and market confidence.

My opinion that Fairfax Financial will resell BlackBerry later on to gain higher price, meanwhile the money will be used to salvage whatever BlackBerry still has as their saving grace. Most likely to relaunch BBM on Android and iOS, and also paying the 4500 employees they said good bye to. If I work for BlackBerry, becoming the first 4500 now looks more promising than fighting with the sinking ship.

So my guess, we still need to wait the news of when BlackBerry is ready to launch BBM on Android. My guess is next month. Sorry guys, this rollersoacter is a bad news for now. At least, I was right, we are witnessing a milestone in history: the sinking of BlackBerry.

First Impression: BBM on Android Part 2

Okay, today is 21st September 2013. This is the day Blackberry promised BBM will be on Google Playstore. It is 22:15 and BBM is still not in the Playstore yet. Lucky me, a friend send me a link to download what seems to be a beta version of BBM for me to test. My apology to BlackBerry for testing it before it enters the market, but then agan it will help you marketing wise and who knows my input can provide some future enhancement for BBM.

The first time you open the BBM app, you will be ask to register yourself usng a valid email. Just follow the procedure and you will receive your BBM Pin. If you forgot to safe your in number, click your name on top to open this screen:

Click on Show Barcode to open this screen below and you have your pin there.

Note: All personal details of my friend and I are covered to protect our personal details.

Afterwards, you are ready to use BBM.

Warning: what I use is a working beta version, so the released version might be different, but the operation should not be too far from this beta version.

Now, my impression on BBM:

Initial Processes

The email registration to get the pin is a bit annoying, but all messaging apps are alike. It takes sometimes to finish the registration, so bare with it guys.

Screen Design

Simple, very BlackBerry 10 and easy to understand.

It is clear that the sense of menu organization style is totally different to most messaging app in Android. BlackBerry keeps everything as simple as possible, but they should think about not spreading the menu all over the place (hidden in right, left, and bottom panels). For Android users, too many hidden menu doesn't mean the app is cool but making it less accessible.

Also, the screen are only designed for smartphones, not tablet. I do hope the released version can compensate for tablet so user like won't have to turn the tablet back and forth. Please also note, some users are using smartpones that can be switched into tablets, like Asus Padfone.

Chat Screen

It's BBM. What can I say? Well, why is that emoji so tiny? Please remember that millions of BBM users are youngsters and elders and Android some smartphones' screens have higher resolution, some even reached over 1920x1080 pixels. BlackBerry needs compensate the possibility that the screen resolutions have different calculation of font sizes.

Other than that, the limited picture size is a breeze to download quickly. The message sending status is always the advantage over competitors.

Some Unstability

Maybe because I'm testing a beta version, but some unstability, if not weird functionality is happening. Mine is I cannot be invited, but I can invite others. Another friend can invite, but the acceptance didn't get through. Another cannot invite or get invited.

Background Operation

As usual, BBM is always running in the background so it will always be on. A small BBM icon will appear and stays there. In notification screen, it will state 'Connected' as its status. When you received a messege from your friend, it will appear as additional notification with your friend's name and profile pic appear to the left ofthe message.

Conclusion on Part 2

So far, BBM has created, accidentally or planned, a strong viral marketing in Android community, especially in Indonesia and India, a lot of peole cannot wait for BBM to arrive. Even BlackBerry's management down here has stated that their BBM will surpass WhatsApp or Line. That remains to be seen.

This first impression will continue on Part 3 when the released version finally downloadable in Playstore.

First Impression: BBM on Android (and iOS) Part 1

BlackBerry on Android, must be the 'If I can't beat them, join them' kinda strategy. It is, since 2 years ago, the rumors of BlackBerry Messenger coming to Android has been floating like wild fire. It's not that it is an important move for BlackBerry, but ever since they lost their market and the failure of the numorous BlackBerry units selling as before in the market has put the in the corner of being one of the most high profile surrender to your competitors move. It was not the first time BlackBerry has done this, in the early years BlackBerry has given Windows Mobile (the years of stylus popularity) in April 2007. Now, September 2013, BlackBerry gives Android and iOS access to their so-called secure messeging channel of BBM. A new piece of historical milestone in technology industry.

Viral Marketing strategy.

BlackBerry has released a viral marketing strategy by throwing out a working beta version of Android apk in the Internet several times to create a buzz on BBM release on Android since last year. Recently, they actualy release a working apk downloadable in the Internet for those who are interested to try. This time around, potential users must provide email address to access their server and somehow it went through. The strategy relies on selected social media using tech savvy users.

What does this mean?

It is no secret that BB10 OS is not a success, the investment going into revamping the already dying OS by copying populars schemes, background, slide gestures and menu access are nothing new to Android, iOS and Window Phone users. The usage of soft keyboard to boost BB10 OS has not helped much. BB later released the old and tired physical QWERTY keyboard they popularized.
And as the closing statement, Research In Motion, the mother company changed their name to BlackBerry, and recently release a statement that in November they will announce the name of the company that will 'buy' BlackBerry.
BlackBerry, the giant, has fallen to a fruit and a little robot that took over the world.

BBM on Android and iOS Feels and Look

Let's just say it won't change much, but the looks has been long copied and now copying the competitors to gain popularity, which is a major failure. I tested the so-called beta version without beng able to access the server. It's stuck on Setting Up BBM cycle since the server is not up and running yet. One thing for certain, it will require min of Android ICS (4.0) anf iOS 6 to run BBM.

First Part Closing

I can respect BlackBerry as company with a principle to provide continuous communication solution to their users commitment. Even if there is a possibility that their company and technology will be destroyed by the new owner, they released BBM to the masses for continuous service for at least another year or two. As announced, 21st September 2013, everyone using Android can download BBM from the Playstore, iOS iTunes later that week.

BlackBerry is a sore winner, but at least they are a sore loser.

Service Center Adventure Report

As you might know, I have been using various brand of mobile phones: Motorola, Apple, Samsung, BlackBerry, HTC and Asus. Part of buying a new phone is also to know what and how is their Service Center works. If your phone has problems, you ight need to face them.

Here are my Reviews on branded phone and their Service Center:

1. Motorola

I have used Motorola Milestone, the GSM version of the original Motorola Droid for international market, for about nearly 2 years. It was my first Android phone.
The phone unit is heavy for its size, being made mostly from metal. The physical keyboard added it's weight. However, I have never have any problem with this unit and never sent it to service center. Brilliant product.
However, Motorola Service Center in Indonesia can be considered rare and hard to find. I don't know whether they are confident of their products or just too expensive to open more.

2. Apple's iPad

Well, it's obviously not a phone and don't make calls. But it is a gadget using SIM card and mobile Internet, so I put it in this list.
Service Centers are spread well. Easy to find also, like in Ratu Plaza, Roxy and Mangga Dua. However, the spare parts are too expensive, the service time is too long coz they need to send it to Singapore.
Unit itself is sturdy as long as you don't drop it. If you do, you're out of luck and need to prepare for the headache of expensive replacement spare parts.

3. Samsung

My first Samsung smartphone is Samsung Galaxy Note N7000, I bought it at its launch after waiting in a long line.
Out of all the service centers, Samsung is probably has the best valued service centers. Easy to find, service is adequate, if not better than competitors, and considerably Fast. Faster than competitors. In max 4 days, you either get your phone fixed or get to know when it will be done. The spare parts, although some are expensive, are reasonably priced. You know you bought a good phone that gets the best after sales when you buy a Samsung smartphone.
Samsung Galaxy Note is famous for having charger USB connector problems. Mine was the power input board got fried. So know it and be prepared.

4. BlackBerry

Fast, but illegal. Confused? BlackBerry, like other American companies, underestimate the huge population number of Indonesia, hence they don't immediately open a Service Center. So tons of non-motorized service centers Pop out everywhere. If you want the authorized service center, your unit will be sent to Singapore.
About 5 years ago, they finally open an office in Jakarta and has several authorized services centers. Nice strategy, fast service means losing your warranty. But for customers, bad after sales services for years and years
All BlackBerry units have problems with the pointing tools, track balls or track pads.

5. HTC

Among all, I must congratulate HTC as the worst service center for international companies, even worse than the local ones.
The staffs are polite but always ask to wait. My phone was held for repaired for 2 months and was asked to wait for another month. Apparently, this happens all over the world. Better avoid HTC if you can.
HTC always have spare parts problems, whether it's the screen or the charger connector or whatever. However, they do creatively build a functional and useful smartphones among all brands.

6. Asus

Asus Padfone 2 can be considered a successful smartphone / tablet. However the unit is easily damaged. You dropped it, just cry and don't bother to repair it. The spare parts are expensive.
The service staffs are very friendly and they always do what they promised. However, Asus internal procedure is slow. It took them 1 week to diagnose the problem, 1 more week to repair it if they have the spare part.

7. Nokia

Is probably the most experienced and the most professional among all smartphone service centers. Their service centers are located in the busiest phone reseller centers and each region has at least 1.
You probably need to wait in a long line cause they have the most units of mobile phones sold, but the service is quick, polite, spare parts always ready, and reasonably priced.

I put Nokia Service Center as the best smartphone service center in Indonesia.

Other brands that I have not been able to review is Sony, Huawei, ZTE, and LG. I have never used any of their devices so it's not fair for me to review them.

So there, those are my reviews of smartphones' brands' service centers. Feel free to leave any comment and share your experience also.

First Impression: Google's Chrome Cast

Incredible, I have waiting for Google class product(s) that will make a regular HDMI capable TV into something more than just a "dumb" TV, and here we are. As I have predicted in January, an Android thumb size internet TV enabler will be the game changer, it has. Although the China's Android mini PC didn't hit the mark due to over heating and easily bricked component, like the picture below, their development continues to quad-core class processor.

Now, mid 2013, Google finally release the new Chrome Cast. Of course, Google starts the basic with WiFi based connection and streaming from your devices: smartphones, tablets, or PCs, as long as you have Google Chrome, that means iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, Linux, Ms Windows, but no BlackBerry). The connector is HDMI so it is universal, giving the stream a HD capable presentation, limited only by your WiFi bandwidth.

Is Google too late? Yes and no. Yes because Apple has thrown out their Apple TV, Samsung has perfected their AllShare Dlna connectivity, Sony has improved their cross smartphones/tablets to TV sharing using WiFi in combination with NFC, and China's produces Android microPC like chocolate bars to push regular HDMI capable TV into Internet Smart TV. No because Google needed the time to perfected the micro system of connectivity and usability. With the new improvement that Sony has released few months ago, Google finally has the methodology of easy connection and streaming quality multimedia from Chrome enabled devices to TV.

Is it great? Not yet. It still needs time to develop further with services and stability. Google didn't joke around and dump power supporters into Chrome Cast.

These included features (Netflix and all Google products/services like YouTube, Music, etc) are the one that will drive new generations to buy this product. Of course $35 a pop is certainly an Apple TV killer on the loose.

Here are the nagging question: why don't Chrome Cast has a mini/micro SIM card slot to enable independent connectivity? The answer lies on whether or not you want to carry around your HDMI capable TV? Obvious, isn't it?

My nagging question is, why not propose Chrome Cast to HBO Networks, Fox, Warners, and others alike as the subscription tool? Here goes the death of TV Cable and the rise of Broadband and WiMax providers.

Of course, these all are predictions and still to be seen in the future. Why not share your comment and we'll discuss this further.

Review: Tubemate - YouTube Video/Music Downloader

You like a video or a music video on YouTube and you want to keep it? In Windows or Mac OS, it's easy, tons of YouTube downloader exists, most for free. How about for Android?

Yes, there are. One in particular I found stand out better above the rest: Tubemate.

You can not download Tubemate from Play Store because it is not a Google approved application, and you need to set your Android device to be able to install apps from third party source first. The way you can down load Tubemate is to go to www.google.com and search for Tubemate. Download then install it. Easy.

Tubemate basically functions as alternative app to access YouTube mobile website.

See the green arrow at the bottom of the screen, press the button and you will be able to download the opened video from YouTube.

The advantages:
- easy 1 touch download
- high speed dowanloader
- choose the video resolution size to download, the bigger the resolution the clearer the video but larger size
- you can pause downloads, resume whenever you want
- directly convert the video into MP3 (128kbps MP3 quality)
- can access non-mobile videos
- if you sign in to Google in YouTube, your subscription is accessible
- you can share your video

The disadvantages:
- battery hog
- internet quota hog
- tends to block other apps' internet access when downloading at lower Internet speed
- MP3 at lower quality conversion
- video downloads are only in MP4 and FLV formats

Why not try Tubemate if you want to safe locally any YouTube video. Easy to use and versatile.

Review: tTorrent

Torrent? Well, like Windows system, Android also has torrent downloading apps to be used.

I found among all the existing torrent app in Play Store, tTorrent to be the best app available, and apparently the first to include search and download features in a single app.

If you search the Play Store for torrent, you will find tTorrent at the top 5 in most countries. In the screen shot, it is number 3.

tTorrent advantages:
- built in search (you will be ask to download search engine at first search, download it)
- it connects to several popular torrent servers: bitsnoop, isohunt, pirate bay, limetorrent, extratorrent, etc.
- free version can have at max 250 kBps download speed
- you can set tTorrent a certain number of download torrent simultaneously, remember 250 kBps is split to the number simultaneous torrent download actively running
- limit upload speed, by default it has unlimited speed but you can set it to specific speed at min 5 kBps
- can be set to shutdown after download completed
- good news, Windows' viruses don't work on Android
- automatic saving at stop point should the internet connection got cut off, whether it is caused by power drain or just broken connection
- share magnetic link
- easy access with torrent file

Disadvantages:
- battery hog
- tends to overheat the smartphones
- beware of virus, malware and spyware (not all anti virus can detect them)
- beware of fake files
- if you use quota based internet, it will drain your quota like a gold-digger

Why use tTorrent?
- to sample music before you purchase the CD/DVD
- to sample movies before you buy the collectible version
- to sample software before buying the license

Of course for every good thing, there is a bad thing also. I don't know whether by reviewing this app, tTorrent will have problems with Google or not, but so far I found tTorrent to be the best torrent available in Android so far. Try it, maybe you like it. If you like it, don't forget to buy it. Support the maker.

Review: Quick Keyboard Switch

When you have at tablet, switching from landscape to portrait and vise versa sometimes causes problems in the form of keyboard functionality. In my case it gets worse since my Asus Padfone 2 can switch from smartphone OS to tablet OS. The problem is that smartphone keyboard buttons are too small for tablet, while tablet's keyboard buttons are too big for smartphone. Unfortunately, not all manufacturer provides settings for this small unforeseen necessity.

Solution a small application called Quick Keyboard Switch. This app practically a link to open up local & input setting by adding home screen widget, notification widget or just direct access to the app itself. That way, when you are to tablet or to smartphone mode, all you need to download is to quickly change the keyboard you want to use in each mode, without the need to go through the settings levels.

It is useful when you need to answer your email or editing a document quickly, since you can access it from notification pull down/up menu.

Quick Keyboard Switch has 2 versions available, free (with ads support) and paid version. Try the free on and start doing your typing quicker and easier.

First Impression: Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0

It's here, the new update on Samsung Galaxy Tab series, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0.

With the success of Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0, the Korean manufacturer continues the streak with GalTab 3 at 8.0 inch screen.

Quick specification:

- Dual core 1.5GHz, MALI 400M GPU
- Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean)
- 1.5GB RAM, external memory microSD upto 32GB
- 1280 x 800 pixels TFT Capacitive Screen
- Phone function
- Stereo Speakers
- 5 MP back camera and 1.3 MP front camera
- 209.8 x 123.8 x 7.4 mm
- 4450mAh battery

It is thinner than 1cm for easy holding. This tablet is definitely for home use and gaming, if not entertainment.

The tab is always the preferred tablet of students, housewives and elders. Tab 3 will strengthen that position by improving the specification and capabilities.

Weakness:
- as always, not bright enough under direct sunlight
- 1.5GB RAM? it's neither here nor there
- 8.0" screen means heavier when used to read for long period
- new tablet accessories needed.

At around US$ 440 (Rp. 4,450,000) unlocked at launching next week at Samsung Experiential stores throughout Indonesia, Samsung will continue to rule the position of no. 1 tablet manufacturer in Indonesia.

Recommendations who should buy:
- for game players
- students
- young executives
- films and YouTube lovers

Review: Sony Xperia Z

Sony Xperia Z is Sony's answer to Samsung Galaxy S4, HTC One and iPhone 5. Is it competitive or Sony struck dead end?

Design:
- beautiful and thoughful
- sharp edge, sharpest of all
- long and tall
- tends to be slippery when wet
- thin
- nice side buttons locations, need to get use to but at the end easy to access with left hand. Right handed users expect difficulty accessing due to awkward side buttons location
- the sides are made of plastic

Screen:
- 1080p is great for watching HD movies
- not bright enough. HTC One is the brightest
- slippery screen, no need scratch proof added screen protector
- I don't get what Bravia screen means since it's similar to others

Camera:
- poor quality, when captured picture zoomed, strange prism pixelation made the picture ugly

Speakers:
- loud enough, but not too loud
- it's a Sony without the Mega Bass, use headphone for more bass
- need to follow HTC to relocate speaker location

Functionality:
- Sony hit the jackpot by utilizing the common NFC with their other products for easy connections, the easiest to connect among the competitions.
- dust and water proof means active users, so office bound users only use this for fun, but you never know when you drop your phone by accident
- the glass screen is not truly shatter proof, only protected by additional layer. Beware
- quad-core is fast and responsive
- bloat ware, not favorite
- battery saving mode, similar to HTC One and Asus Padfone 2, screen off means all connections are down until you turn the screen back on. Power users might choose Samsung Galaxy S4 instead with replaceable battery
- external memory, yeay

So there, simple and short review on Sony Xperia Z. Highly recommended for clumsy and outdoor active users.

Basic Knowledge to Digital Music Part 2

No The Listening Device

In part one, we have discussed digital music formats and we have touched some of the players for the digital music files. Whether it is PC or portable players (iPod, SanDisk Sansa, or any others), we still need a listening device to enjoy the music being played.

There are 2 major categories: speakers and headphones. Speakers produce the digital music to be heard by many, while headphones play it for individual listener.

Before we proceed in further discussing the listening device, we need to build the foundation about the sound produced by them, the sound frequency.

Human ears, no matter how sensitive, only hears sound frequency between 20Hz to 20,000Hz. Below 20Hz or above 20kHz won't heard. Some people might claim they do, but it isn't so. We are affected by the lower and the higher than human hearing range, but that's a different topic of discussion that relates to health.

Any sound frequency that we, human, can hear is divided into 3 major categories:
- Low frequency, commonly known as bass
- Mid frequency, usually related to singers' voice and main musical instruments
- High frequency, commonly known as treble

To hear music properly and enjoyably, the 3 frequency categories need to be arranged in such ways that we can enjoy. The arrangement is known as "tuning". Each sound producing device are tuned in specific manner to produce the best result for us the listeners.

For speakers, the high end speakers usually divided into tweeter, mid or main speakers and woofer. As guessed, tweeter plays higher frequency as dominant frequency. Woofer add the power of the bass at lower frequency. Main speakers plays all frequencies but focus on mid frequency.
These speakers, whether you have 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, or 11, are connected to a sound processor usually known as Amplifier. Amplifier boost the sound frequency from the music player to the speakers level. Without amplifier, the sound might not be produced properly, most likely to low on volume.
The source or the music player can be a portable music player or CD/DVD/BluRay player or any legacy player (cassette tape player, etc).
These are the basic construct of speakers based music players. It could be more complicated depending on how a person like his/her music played.

However, in headphones is more complicated, since the unit is smaller and limited by its size. Headphones uses small speakers to put on above or in wearer's ears.  The goal of the headphones design is to simulate multiple big speakers listening experience with the limited number of small speakers in a headphone.
Headphones by itself has several categories based on the size:
- over ear, which is usually the size used by most high end headphones. The characteristic is that the listening part of the headphone cover the wearer ears, that's why over ear headphones are k own as full size headhones. A pair of cushions are used to position the speaker parts of the headphones just above the wearer ears. Since the area available for the small speakers is bigger, a lot of headphones use small speakers with radius of 40mm or bigger. With the bigger size speakers, the tuning makes it possible to reproduce wider range of frequency. Don't be surprised to find headphones with 5Hz to 30Hz sound frequency range.
To enhance the tuning, the over-ear headphones can either have opened back or closed back. Opened back headphones has a more airy quality, hence closer to big speakers experience. While the closed back headphones, sound frequencies are either bounced back into our ear or absorbed by a layer of material behind the closed back area. Off course, opened back headphones leaks sound, meaning people next to you can hear what you are listening. Closed back headphones sealed the sound inside the headphones and almost has no sound leak.
Open back headphones are usually produce the best sound that sound editors and engineers use them as their main tools. While closed back commonly used by DJs caused it sealed their ears from outside noises better.

- on ear, mostly found in portable headphones, on ear headphones become popular with the birth of Sony's Walkman. The listening units are placed literally on the wearer's ears, and to give additional comfort usually they have cushions to protect wearers ears and the speaker units inside. It is light weight, usually foldable for easy transport and always leak sounds regardless whether it is opened back or closed back. The small speakers size is off course smaller than over ear, 40mm or smaller. Being smaller means limited tuning capability and lower quality sound producers compared to the over ear.
Despite the benefits of avoiding to look like Princess Leia, on ear headphones are less comfortable, mostly because we, humans, tend to sweat.
The tuning, being limited, is a challenge by itself. Most on ear headphones has at least 1 are of frequency sacrificed (less bass, less. mid or less treble).

- in ear headphones literally placed inside the wearer's ears, hence the term earphones. Currently, there 2 types of in ear earphones: ear bud (which is placed at the cave of one's ear, just at the opening of the ear canal) and ear canal earphones (which has a small pipe protected by cushioning to be placed inside the wearer's ear canal).
Earbud usually employs a bigger micro speakers of 10mm or smaller. While ear canal earphones have tiny micro speakers.
Earbud is older technology and less comfortable due to the vibration of the earphones that worn the ear caves and hurt the wearer when worn more than 1 hour long. Sennheiser and Yuin (headphone manufacturers) try to bring back earbud and placed them at high end earphones lately and quite successful in the last couple of decades with Sennheiser MX series and the legendary Yuin PK series.
Ear canal is the newer technology and has a more direct to ear drum access. The cushioning of ear canal earphones also acts as nice blocker so wearers won't be bothered by ambience noise. Concert musicians usually wear ear canal earphones customized to fit their ears during concerts so they can focus on playing better.
The current technology of tiny micro speakers now enables an ear canal earphones to have upto 4 tiny micro speaker in each unit. Each tiny micro speakers are tuned to boost a certain area of the frequency. With such technology, sound editors and engineers, who usually wear full size headphones, can use ear canal earphones to monitor sounds frequencies during recording or live concert.
With direct access to ear drums, ear canal can be turned d to produce a very high quality sounds to rival open back, full size headphones, hence the term In Ear Monitor (IEM).

Which is your preferred listening device? Everyone has their preferences. I'm like headphones better than big speakers, hence the term headfi. It's a personalized experience.  However if you asked hifi or headfi lovers, they have the same answer: the goal is to find the subjective perfection of sound as intended by the musicians.

Pricing wise, from the legendary STAX to China's no-brand headphones, you have a lot of choices with pricing as high as the sky.
Which brand is better? Well, that's for everyone to comment and discuss. A forum for headphones lovers are available in the Internet, as well as the speakers lovers.
My personal preference are Ultrasone Edition 8, Ultimate Ears 700, Jays V-Jays, Audio Technica M50LE, and Superlux HD381F. My player SanDisk Sansa Clip+.

Basic Knowledge to Digital Music Part 1

The music and it's format:

In this part, we discuss the numerous formats music is available in this digital age. Let's consider that CD/DVD are the source that use PCM audio format (big files, a 4 minute song can be stored at 50MB size file) , so any ripped musics from the source needs to be converted into a certain format of digital music file. Here are some of the most important to know:

- MP3
This is a standard format to get a smaller size of music. Of course, being smaller in size means there are quality to sacrifice. Most common in today's are 64kbps-320 kbIt/s. The higher the better. However, even at the highest conversion, the music quality will still lost parts of the music when compared to the original or higher end format. Regular music file in MP3 format usually is 3MB-12MB depending on the conversion method.  By audiophiles and Headfi-ers, mp3 is considered a lossy format since some of the music are cut off due to the smaller size of the file.

- Apple and Windows format
Both Microsoft and Apple produces wma and m4a as their standard format. Both also has lossless version which has more details, but still loss details. These 2 formats are better than Mp3. However, each has different quality. wma has bigger size file. Mostly sized at 4MB-20MB.
Both Apple and Microsoft also built a lossless format called ALAC and WAVE.

- FLAC
FLAC format is commonly know among the audiophiles and Headfi-ers as the minimum standard of high fidelity music file. The details are more apparent and significantly higher quality compared to the previous formats. The file also significantly larger: +/- 30MB.
FLAC measurement is using unit data measurement between 8-24 bit.

- WAVE
This format is is probably the closest to the source and even has more details compared to the rest. Significantly more high quality means the listeners can listen to all instruments played in a music as presented and intended by the musicians. Close to original means the loss of quality is very little that human ears usually can't recognize the difference immediately. The file size is usually +/-40MB depending on the conversion and music duration. A 2 minute song would be around 20MB in size when converted to WAVE format.
Although there are still arguments, WAVE is considered to be the best digital format available for digital music. However also the lost difficult to play. The measurement standard is also measured in kHz instead of kbps. Most common standard found is 8-24 bit.
To those not familiar with high definition recording, Wave format musics are considered bright, high in treble. This is due to the high details contained in the music file. Hence you will need a higher level headphones or speakers to play the file to reproduce it's high detailed music.

- ALAC
Apple lossless format is also common in iPod and iPhone. Like Wave format, the file is is large, bit not as large as the  original. It is smaller than Wave and has different musical characteristic since it has Apple musical signature of sound. Although it is also high in details, more boomy bass is apparent.
Alac can only be played in Apple standard player: iTunes, iPod, iPad and iPhone. With this limitation, Wave is more popular among Headfi-ers and audiophiles.

There several lore formats available, but it is less common, like ogg, aiff, etc.
If you found a high end mp3 player capable of playing high end music format, don't be surprised that at 64 MB is still considered a small player. High end music player examples: SanDisk Sansa, Cowon, iRiver, HiFiMan, and so on. Although iPod is capable to play lossless formats, most audiophiles considered them lower level quality in  term sound produced.
As an example, even at lossless format, iPod will play drum beats with boomy beats or guitar riffs extended to mask the lost details. While in other high end players, you can heard the drum stick hitting the drum skin or guitar pick striking the string of guitar.
The result is a different experience of listening. Higher details means we listen to music as intended by the musicians. While lossy music is just a music played like in an FM radio (reproduced to equal as 128kbps mp3).

Warning: Once you got used to hear the high end music standard format, you will always feel lossy format lack of "spirit".

Password Manager: Dataviz's PasswordPlus

Ever having problems on how to keep your list of passwords and usernames together, as secrets but accessible anytime you need one of them?

In Android and iOS, there are tons of password manager apps, from paid to free, localized to online. But which is better?

The answer is of course depending on what you need. Not one is better nor worse. I can tell you my experience which I think will help a bit.

I have used several password manager myself. Like everyone, I have so many access usernames and passwords that it gave me a headache to remember them all, despite the similarity of the usernames and passwords. So, I decided to use password manager to simplify my life.

Easy enough, I have tons of options. However, just last year, Dataviz, the maker of Documents Togo, published a new app called PasswordPlus. It's basically a paid app. But it has several features that I like.

The advantages :
+ single access master password to remember
+ quite a versatile database entry system
+ sync to PC, Mac OS, Android, and iOS with multiple units on each platform
+ Dataviz doesn't keep you sync keys so only you have it

The disadvantages :
- not even Dataviz has your sync key
- rather slow synchronization
- lose the master password or sync key means losing all your data

I have been using PasswordPlus for about 6 months and I must say I'm impressed. I don't easily impressed with password manager and this one is basically has all the stuff I need. Synchronization across gadgets is a benefit I don't expect to praise. Meaning anytime you need, you access any device you have and it's there. Whether it is a bank account, online access, cloud access or anything, PasswordPlus prepares the entry system securely.

However, there is a precaution. I had the most unlucky scenario that even Dataviz didn't expect to happen. All my smartphones were damaged : Samsung Galaxy Note required a power board replacement, Asus Padfone 2 required mother board replacement, and I have no clue what my HTC Desire VC needed a replacement, and worse I have no laptop to go back to. Hence all access to PasswordPlus sync key are gone. So when I log in to my master password, PasswordPlus asked my sync key from of of my device and it's not there. So. If you want to use PasswordPlus, make sure you keep the sync key in a locked safe written manually.

Otherwise it is the best password manager I have ever used.

Quick Review: Samsung Galaxy Note Jelly Bean Upgrade

I finally has my Samsung Galaxy Note repaired. The cost was around $160. Samsung Service Center replaced a whole power board to repair it. Plus, they gave me the Jelly Bean android in return.

The Jelly Bean upgrades on SGNote :
- Multi Windows
- SmartStay
- Upgraded UI
- New AllShare
- Retirement of S Memo
- S Pen integrated S Planner
- Upgraded S Note
- Editable Multi Windows tray
- Favorite Apps widget
- Active Lock Screen
- New looks on lock screen and home screen
- Better folder management
- New and closer to vanilla android apptray

All in all, it looks like the new upgrade puts SGNote nearer to SGNote 2, but without the Quad-core capacity.

The bad news:
- Heavy operational
- Beware the RAM, almost always in the red zone
- Strangely enough better battery economy if multi windows are turned off
- Slower response on all the new features

If you enjoy the responsiveness of the original SGNote in ICS, better avoid this upgrade. If note, the upgrade is one worthy taken despite the slower processing.

Managing Tasks with Any.Do

Whether it is for work or for household management, we all need a toll to remind us what needs to be done constantly. I've been searching for an application that can support me in task management and found Any.Do, an online task management application on Android, PC and Mac OS that goes beyond listing and reminding tasks at hands.

The benefits:
- Nagging reminder, almost like having a wife as a secretary, it nags and reminds you constantly as programmed. It works across platforms so the nagging goes in all installed tools you have.
- Online capability means it link all your android, PC and Mac OS to provide all linked task management system.
- In app added application in Chrome enables you to right click and add task directly from a website
- Linked to Gmail for easy task adding
- Morning day plan to easily browse what to do that day in the morning
- Provided note taking feature to make the task clearer
- Meeting report request will run after the meeting is completed to give you a chance to enter notes from the meeting.
- It's free
- Always on

Note: it doesn't have iPhone (iOS) version.

Try it, it's worth it to have a strong task management app.

Android Music Player Review: JetAudio vs PlayerPro

Listening to music is probably one of the most usable features of Android Smartphones. So useful that some manufactures boast about the capability of their smartphones musical capability.

I'm using Asus Padfone 2 and the original Samsung Galaxy Note N7000, despite of being the underdog compared to Samsung Galaxy S3 & S4, Sony Xperia Z, and HTC One, I'm quite surprise that musically it is a capable, if not excellent, audio player. It has flat neutral tone and clarity as a player.  So all I need is to find the most capable Audio/Music Player application for this PadFone2.

Side note: sound reproduction quality Asus Padfone 2 vs Samsung Galaxy Note: SGNote is warmer with more power on bass, but details rather sacrificed. Asus Padfone 2 is flatter with tighter bass and higher details. Quality wise, Asus Padfone 2 wins.

I have been testing several apps ever since I owned Asus Padfone 2: Google Music, WinAmp, PowerAmp, JetAudio, Neutron Player, PlayerPro and SoundMax.

My requirements for suitable music player are as follows:
- It needs to be able to play FLAC and Wave lossless format music
- Clarity for details and sound stage
- Flat tone preferences
- Able to support my collection of headphones and earphones
- All those must be fulfilled without any equalizer adjustment (EQ off)
Note: Equalizer needs to be off or set to flat/normal to make sure that the sound characteristic tuning is accordingly to the recorders/musicians attended sound or musical characteristics.

Out of all, I dropped out Google Music (no FLAC playing), WinAmp (sound quality not to my preference), and PowerAmp (too much sibilance and bad sound staging).  Later on, I dropped SonicMax, despite it is the only app and does BBE sound setting and very customizable, it doesn't have the EQ off setting, meaning everything is already set as sound tuning effect and it is the most bass-focussed player I tested.

The selection comes to JetAudio and PlayerPro.  Both have similar characteristics:
- Play FLAC and WAVE
- Read Folders
- Able to play music as it is (EQ off)
- Good sound tone characteristics: excellent brightness (excellent details, excellent sound separations, acceptable sound staging)
- Both can support my headphones and earphones (Super lux HD381F, UE700, Sennheiser MX760, Ultrasone HFI 450 and Jays V-Jays)
- Both have simulated amp setting, to adjust the volume out to support bigger headphones (preamp setting), pretty good for my Ultasone HFI 450 since it requires higher amp out.

The differences are as follows:

(Pre-note: songs used for testing are GnR's Welcome to the Jungle, Hans Zimmer's Molossus, Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerard's Now We are Free, Yasuharu Takanashi's Fairy Tail Theme, Slipknot's Psychosocial,  Susan Wong's First of May, Nightwish's Wish I Had an Angel, and Maroon 5's Move Like Jagger.)

JetAudio:
- Mid frequency is adequate, almost every vocals sound as they are supposed to sound, except when the singer has the tendency of having higher pitch sound characteristic (it rolled off)
- Bass impact is excellent, tight but powerful, all music become warmer
- High frequency details is adequate and controllable, no sibilance.
- Sound staging is leaning towards a smaller space; imagine you are listening the music in your bedroom or living room, you can allocate the source and they are at close range.
- Sound separation detail is sacrificed due to the enhancement of bass tonality. Nightwish's Wish I Had an Angel lost its cymbals percussions and parts of bass guitar. Hans Zimmer's Molossus percussions are inseparable.
- PreAmp enables the songs to have higher power up to a small level
- However, when played using speakers, JetAudio sounds excellent and well balanced and relax, if not laid back. Very enjoyable.
- Gapless play is poor quality. Not recommended, better turn it off.
- Recommended for pop, hip hop, dance, techno and other genres that requires more bass tonality.

PlayerPro:
- Mid frequency is good and clear
- Bass is tight and less boomy, but keeps adequate impact.
- High frequency is very good, producing details and controlled treble. Sibilance only heard when using higher PreAmp level.
- Sound staging is acceptable. I can recognize where were the musicians of each instrument were located.
- Sound separation is surprisingly better, the separation of each instrument is clearer in symphonic metal and classical musics.
- PreAmp enables the song to have higher power up to a small level
- Recommended for acoustic, classical, jazz, rock and metal songs.

With this summary, I recommend PlayerPro. Get the paid version since it comes with 2x equalizer adjustment frequency to tweak for those who prefer customized music reproduction.

Smartphone AND Tablet: The Unique Padfone 2

Up until last year, the world smartphone or tablet users are given 2 major choices: own a smartphone and/or a tablet. Asus broke those dilemma and gave us Asus Padfone. It was okay at the market, but I woouldn't categorize it as successful however it did open a great freedom of option for users to have a smartphone that can also function as a tablet at the same time.

Asus Padfone 2 has just been released and I took a big chance in buying it as a replacement of my beloved Samsung Galaxy Note N7000.  Interestingly, my main reason to purchase Asus Padfone 2 is because 3 main reasons:

  1. Despite the drawback of not having replaceable battery, it combines 2 battery a 2,140 MAh and a 5,000 MAh.
  2. Despite of lacking external memory expansion, it does come in 64 GB which means more than satisfactory at current needs, at least for the next 2 years.
  3. It's a 4.7" phone and a 10" tablet at the same time, the dual personality that it's competitors are lacking.
Of course coming from SGNote, there are certain concerns that Asus Padfone 2 doesn't have like:
  1. SMemo and SNote
  2. SPen Stylus
Anyway, let's go deeper into the review, if you will, on the Asus Padfone 2.

Hardware:
- 1.5GHz quad-core processor is powerful enough for today's multi tasking
- phone unit is thin enough with circular pattern back for easy
- the rim of the phone unit is made of aluminum and felt easily scratched
- tablet felt sturdy but also a bit weak construction-wise
- excellent IPS screen, bright and clear, despite of only 1280x720 resolution
- built in speaker  are excellent and loud, tablet is several notch louder with bigger speaker. The location of the speakers are easily covered when put on the table

Bloatware:
- only a little, webstorage, app locker, etc. The most useful feature is the floating windows apps that can be accessed from the bottom of the screen, but only has limited list of
- power management is impressive although not the most thorough, mainly focus on power sharing and turning off network access for most apps during screen off.

Headfi:
- for headphones users, I think Asus has put a good sound processor for enjoyment. It reproduce flatter frequency, bass are tight and clear, wonderful details for sound separation, no apparent sibilance. It is recommended to buy or download good music player to paring up the potential.

Signal:
As usual like any other Android, standard sensitivity.

Making calls:
Voice are clear and loud enough. It doesn't have move reduction so bear in mind when you are in busy place. My recommendation is to get a Plantronics or Jawbone bluetooth unit for comfort (check my review on some of them in this blog)

Notable problems:
- tablet will always be
- Beware the tablet screen is not very protected from wear and tear. It is easily cracked on
- if you damaged either unit, it will be expensive to service it.
- no accessories for protection, however a Samsung size tablet case will work.

Those are my deeper review. My final recommendation is that this Asus Padfone 2 is designed for work and play and the same time, but it is not for children.

Ultimate Ears 700 : The Ultimate HiFi Experience with Mid-Range Pricing aka Cheap HiFi

Alright, I have reviewed the one I called poor-man's HiFi earphone.  I recently has the privilege to own a air of Ultimate Ears 700 (UE700). Man, this earphone, although not the best of the best, is brilliant.  I think UE has given us the superb earphone that usually will cost us US$ 300 or more at only fractions of the price at US$ 130 - 150.

The Unit :

Build like tiny single driver but once you touch it, you will know that they ain't cheap.
Cable is more than suitable for years of use, plus it doesn't make a lot annoying noise when you wear it.

At first, you need to get use to the color coding, red ring for right ear and black ring for left. It has letters in awkward places for the designation that I failed to find them the first week I wore them.

The speaker driver holes are covered in tiny mess built into the body to protect the drivers from dirt or ear wax, so that is a good choice but cleaning the mess requires soft materials and delicate touch.

Also it comes with a hard box to transport it around with layer of rubber material in inner compartment. Excellent choice, but UE should rethink the locking mechanism since it easily opened accidentally in bags. I need to tighten the box with a rubber band to make sure that it won't be opened accidentally.

The Wear :

Find the most suitable ear plugs for yourself first among 3 sizes of silicon and 2 pairs (different sizes of course) of memory foam like material. These options are very wise and user oriented. Even Shure only gave 1 pair of such foam.

The sealing of the outside noise is quite effective, though not as effective as Shure or others.
And the most important is you can wear it for hours without discomfort, no more explanation needed. Of course you need to find the right fitting of silicons/foams first.

It is also plugging nicely tight without discomfort so you can dance lightly, no professional dancing please, or jogs and it won't come off.

The Sound :

Let see if I can describe the UE700 and its sound to you coz it is a challenge for me. This is a warm earphone.  I hope I didn't disappoint.

The first thing I noticed is the details of the sound that the drivers produce. I knew UE700 is a pair of high end HiFi unit, enough to WOW HeadFi contributors.

The Low End is deep enough, though not as deep deep as others in 2x pricing range of UE700. The impact however is excellent to my taste. It has strong impact without damaging your eardrums. The bass has a natural tone characteristic to make listening to music uplifting in the style that the musician intended. It is suitable for nearly all type of music that requires bass impact, but to me it is more enjoyable for Rock, Techno, and Pop (note I don't listen to Jazz). The bass extension is very controllable that you can hear the drummers hitting the skins with their sticks.

Mid End is satisfactory, even when compared to my trusted "poor man's HiFi" Superlux HF381. It plays truer to the voice of singers,  though some female singers lost some of its character and leaning towards sharper tonality. However, raspy and male voices are a joy to listen to.

High End is pronounced smoothly. You can immediately hears cymbals extension and high pitch sound in smooth characteristic, meaning that they don't overdo it. But when you listen to classical music, you immediately can detect that high high end is somewhat missing. I think my Ultra some HFI450 is superior in this frequency range.

Sound separation that usually produced by tuning mid and high end is expertly tuned. You can hear low basses strings playing,  which usually lost in translation. That means bullseye on details.

Sound Staging is excellent for a small, itsy bitsy units. Not as pronounced as Sennheiser MX760 or Ultra some HFI450. However, you can tell where the players located during recording of live performances.

Overall, this UE700 is the earphone that you will wear and dancing foolishly to the music without realizing you are acting like a lunatic because it produces tons of fun sounds in your ears. I did, unfortunately.

So there, UE 700. At US$130-150, it's not cheap, but the cheapest in its class. I call it the cheap HiFi. Try it first, buy it if this is what you are looking for. Coz I find this units are very friendly to the small music players since it is easy to drive.

Is this my new Android Super Phone?

Still considering Sony Xperia Z, Samsung Galaxy Note 2 or Asus Padfone 2.

In Memoriam: My Samsung Galaxy Note

Well, sadly, all good things must come to an end.  This 2013, I have a new job, I have new perspective in life. Now, apparently the changes must come to my mistress, or second wife, if you will: Samsung Galaxy Note.

On March 30th, 2013, I noticed my Samsung Galaxy Note is suffering problems when charging. Later that night, I brought GNote to the ICU at Samsung Service Center. And yesterday, the 31st March 2013, the ICU stated that the cost of repairing was high, so I had to make a hurtful decision to end GNote suffering.  Rest in Peace my dear friend.  Gnote has been accompanying my daily life since October 2011.

My GNote will be placed in its original Premiere big black box that I got when I first bought it, along with its peripherals.

So, the mysamsunggalaxynotejournal.blogspot.com is at an end.  All new articles can be found in this blog page instead.

Farewell.

Review: Plantronics Voyager Legend

For those familiar with Plantronics bluetooth, the Voyager series are known for the best of performance yet kinda less preferable design-wise.

As, you can see, it is big and intrussive.

So why Plantronics Voyagers are successful? The simplest answer is because almost no other bluetooth headpiece can compete with its performance.

Voyager Legend is the latest addition to Voyagers series and Plantronics most advance bluetooth to date this January 2013. Compared to the older design, Plantronics has made some major changes:
- longer and more stylistic boom
- easy access switches on the back
- surprisingly very accessible talk and smart buttons on the side
- new charger magnetic connector

Let's go into the details:

Built

Sturdy with rubber-like finish on most of its main body to prevent it from slipping. Metal-mesh covered boom is easy on the eye and the design minimize facial hair being caught up in mesh.

As usual, Voyagers series are known for big capacity battery for a bluetooth but Plantronics successfully balance the weight.

Please beware, the rotating mid connector between the boom section andbthebearloop section is the usually the first area to get damaged over time, so handle with care.

The buttons are well located throughout the body to make it easy to access and press without taking the unit off. I believe this is the best designed buttons location for a bluetooth. Even much better than all the previous Voyager units.

Comfort

For those familiar in wearing Voyager series (original, Pro and HD) will notice immediately the boom is heavier due to the amount of metal used. Yet, it is still within very comfortable level.

The earloop is slightly smaller compared to the previous versions, so you might need a little adjustment, especially if you are wearing glasses like me.

Also, if you wear glasses, most likely the tip of the curved boom could touch your cheek. Adjust it by swivelling the boom upward a bit. The friction between your cheek andbthe boom might caused some unwanted noise.

Although I have not wear Voyager Legend for long hours, just like the previous version, this bluetooth can be worn all day without any discomfort. Just remember to take it off before you go to bath or sleep

Battery

Being in a bigger size, Voyager Legend has a non-replaceable big capacity battery, lasting 7 hours of talk time and 11 days of standby. On reality, the talk time is about 6:50 on full charge. Still a major power house. Just donot forget to charge it every 7-10 days depending on your daily usage.

Legend is the first line of bluetooth to use magnetic charging connector. All you have to do is stick it to the magnet and the two will find the best connection to charge the earpiece. Though non standard (the rest are using microUSB), I found this is the most useful charging connector when driving since you will not be able to concentrate if you need to find the microUSB by tracing it with your finger tips and trying to connect them while driving. Brilliant decision from Plantronics.

Also, unfortunately not available every country yet, Legend has a charging box that you can bring around. It will add more power to the unit when you are travelling to remote areas without electricity connection.

Sound Quality

Exceptionalky clear both for listening for both side. The WindShield feature eliminates a lot of noise caused by the wind. In combination with the AudioIQ3 Voyager Legend employ, using 3 microphones to eliminate the rest of the audio noise from your surrounding, makes Voyager Legend the most recommended bluetooth on the field.

However, there is a little bit of tricky tweak to enhance the sound. If the ear canal silicon does not fit, ambience noise will leak through and hearing the other side can be difficult in busy area. To tackle this set back, Plantronics employed 3 silicon sizes with 3 foam blanket for the silicon. Find your best fit and get the enhanced sound Plantronics presents you. Plantronics truly successful in injecting Altec Lansing sound quality to this itsy bitsy speaker.

Summary

Although Plantronics Voyager Legend larger body size is not for everyone, itbisbthe moat comfortable bluetooth earpiece available in the market, next to Jabra Wave. The performance truly impressive and w9rth mentioning as the best bluetooth earpiece in the market to date. I won't be surprised if a tech portal or two awarded Legend with the best performance bluetooth of 2012 or 2013.

Pros:
- 7 hours of talk time
- Easy to connect magnetic charging tip
- Long hours wearing comfort
- Non intrusive for those with glasses
- Non intrusive for those with facial hair, beard

Cons:
- The boom is not for everyone though stylistic
- Difficult to store unless you have the charging box, do not put it in your pocket aince it wilk break

Review: Plantronics M1100 Savor

For those who use bluetooth hands free, you might be familiar with the brand already.  Currently, the 2 brands respected as the the producers of best bluetooth earphones or headsets are Plantronics and Aliph.  Each uses different technology, Plantronics uses computerized noise reduction using multiple microphones, they call it AudioIQ.  While Aliph produces Jawbone earphone to read cheekbone vibration to produce noise free communication, known as Noise Assassin.

Plantronics M1100 or Savor is probably famous since it was the smallest bluetooth earphone to use advance AudioIQ3, which means Savor utilizes 3 microphones to capture surrounding sound, including the user's, to produce the clearest sound of the user.  The party who receive the phone will hear the user voice clearer even if the user is in a crowded place, such as a mall or bus station.

I have been using Plantronics M1100 for about 1 year already, so my apology if this review is very late in the game.  However, being one of the best bluetooth earphone available in the market right now, I think it is still beneficial for you who wants to get one.

  • Multipoint connection enable connection to 2 phones simultaneously and both are active.

NotableWeakness:
  • No dedicated volume up and down bottom, only circular volume, which is problematic sometimes
  • So tiny, sometimes it hides in the seat of my car, even got lost in my jacket's pocket.
  • No carrying case included

Conclusion:
Savor is not the most stylistic bluetooth earphone in the market, but the most practical and functional bluetooth earphone that you can wear for hours while driving or in a busy place without any discomfort.  Nowadays, it's price has slopped down from 1 year ago (around US100 now), but the performance that you can get from Savor will satisfy your daily use.

Comparison to Aliph Jawbone Icon (my wife used one):
After 1 year, Icon starts to have some minor problems, like connection to the phones become unstable and the sound quality is less than when new, some static noise has started to appear.

The Benefit of VPN.

VPN or Virtual Private Network. This network feature exists in nearly all modern latest PC and smartphones. In concept, VPN drill a pipeline into existing network you are using, turning your connection into a private network by protocol. Originally design for corporate security when connected in public network, VPN has become common feature in todays computer powered tools, PCs laptops, tablets and smartphones. Most people don't use this feature because it is too complicated to use. Nowadays, there are so many shortcuts available for anyone to use VPN without any technical knowledge.

Before we explore the VPN feature activation applications in the market, it's best if we explore the benefits of VPN.

1. Enhance Security.

Especially important when you are travelling. Connecting public network, such as in cafe, hotel lobby, airport, etc., regardless how secure the connection is, still opens a possibility of someone hacking your connection, hence your data becomes less private.

Using VPN adds a layer of shield to your connection. Imagine your connection is a strand wire, using VPN add a hose surrounding your wire, thus suspiscious character(s) needs double efforts to get to your precious data. This is also the reason that corporation use network login page for you to access company's database. That first login is actually the VPN connection.

2.  Enhance Privacy.

VPN also add privacy enhancement to your equipment. When you access a website, the website servers also access your equipment at least for your identification and location. Nowadays, with smarter websites, smartphones, applications, high capacity processors and connections, more data transactions are exchanged in each connections.

When you activate VPN and connect to the VPN servers, some of your personal and private data are hidden, such as your real location is hidden behind the VPN server location (note: turning on GPS confirms your location), your identity will be revealed as the login of VPN server,

With the 2 mentioned benefit above, you gained additional benefit:

3. Hiding your location when browsing

Since website you visited caught the location of the VPN server you use, your true location is hidden. Yes, you browse websites that usually blocked in your country. Note: most VPN service is paid service, some are full malware, and some are blocked by the provider.

4. Hide your location

Imagine sending an email and saying you are outside of the country, and it can be proven. Looks like a good spammer tool, doesn't it? But a good tool to hide your real location nonetheless.

How to easily activate VPN feature in your PC and Macbook? Simple, Google VPN and you will be presented with tons of options.

For Android phones and tablets, type VPN in Play Store search box and you can choose the one suited your usage.

For iOs phones and tablets, find VPN in the store.

I am honestly not sure if Windows phones store has it, if you find them, let me know.

To close this article, I think VPN is a feature that useful for work and play. Enjoy it.

Additional note: I will write an article on how to activate VPN in Samsung Galaxy Note in my other blog (mysamsunggalaxynotejournal.blogspot.com).
